Concept Check #2: Equity

Updated: Oct 31, 2022

Equity is the more informed and complex version of equality. Both concepts are concerned with fairness, but they attempt to achieve fairness in different ways. Equality attempts to achieve fairness by giving everyone the same resources and/or opportunities regardless of background or hardships. Equity, on the other hand, takes a more nuanced and informed approach to fairness and attempts to achieve it by giving everyone the resources and opportunities they specifically need to reach the same outcomes as everyone else.

Understanding the root causes to social issues and learning how to remove barriers and increase access to resources, opportunities, and outcomes is central to the concept of equity. Not everyone starts the race at the same place or at the same time. Equity is concerned with learning the starting point for a person and giving them the resources they need to ensure they reach the finish line like everyone else.
