Concept Check #3: Inclusion

Whereas diversity is the simple existence of variety, inclusion is the intentional incorporation, embracement, and engagement of said variety of people.

Inclusion takes diversity a step further. It is not enough to have a diverse group of people; you must also commit to building an environment that welcomes them all into the fold and encourages them to be full participants and contributors.

Inclusion is about developing a culture of respect, support, and meaningful validation. It is only within this culture of inclusion that the true benefits of diversity can be seen.

It is not enough to invite a diverse group of people to a party; you must also invite them to dance. Similarly, organization must take their efforts beyond hiring a diverse group of people, they must fully engage them in decision making at all levels of the organization.
