Concept Check #4: Identity

Identity is about the many factors, qualities, beliefs, and group memberships that make each individual person unique. These include—but are not limited to—race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, social class, etc.

Identity is complex and can evolve over time. Identity helps describe who you are and affects how you are perceived by others. It is the filter with which you view the world.

Your identity is a mix of factors that you are born with and factors that you self-select. As you walk through life, your identity affects how you interact with the world, the doors that open for you, and the challenges you will face.

Your identity can be the difference between being in pole position, and starting the race at all.
