What is the goal of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)? What are we trying to accomplish?
One goal of DEI education is the development of a new perspective—a new way to look at the world around you. A new way to be critical about the stories, institutions, cultural norms, and traditions that make up our society. DEI education is an attempt to remove the wool from over your eyes. Gaining this new critical perspective takes time and effort, but it can be accomplished by anyone willing to put in the work.
For any DEI education to be well-rounded and useful it must be built on an understanding of history. There is a reason why our society is the way that it is, and history tells us that story. When we look at history, we can piece together a timeline of how we got to our current situation.
Learning history gives us context. Context helps us to piece together the circumstances and conditions that built the society we live in today. Context is the setting of the story and helps us better assess where we are.
If we learn the history and understand the context, we can gain a new perspective. This perspective is informed, empathetic, and justice oriented. Achieving a new critical perspective can transform your life and the way you interact with the world around you.
Over the next few weeks, we will be posting snippets of history that are critical to the story of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Feel free to chime in with info you may know that is critical to the story!
